Too often therapeutic approaches are narrow, reductionist, and pathologizing. My assumption when working with a client is NOT that they are broken, but that they are looking for ways to overcome the barriers keeping them from having the life they want.

“An abnormal reaction to an abnormal situation is normal behavior.”
-Viktor Frankl

A normal human being….does not exist

From the day one of therapy with a client, I work to provide very practical tools to help clients experience life on their terms as soon as possible. However, depending on the needs and desires of the client, we will also do a lot of work to address some the larger concerns of our existence on this very strange planet.

There is no good reason why we should not develop and change until the last
day we live.
— Karen Horney

Cookie-cutter approaches to therapy rarely (actually never) manage to meet the needs of clients. Since, each client is unique in who they are and how they experience the world, each client will require a unique and individualized therapeutic approach. While, I have theoretical and therapeutic approaches I find most helpful (Existential/Humanistic, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and REBT and CBT) I always work in a collaborative partnership with my clients to determine what works best for their unique personality and needs.

“I believe “technique” is facilitative when it emanates from the therapists unique encounter with the patient. Every course of therapy consists of small and large spontaneously generated responses or techniques that are impossible to program in advance.”
